It's always important for businesses to have the right people to grow further. Having the right team is one thing and having the right manager for team management is another.

It has been seen that businesses lose their way not because they are bad offering services or selling products, but because they don't have the right leadership to make progress.

This is why having a manager should always be at the forefront of your business success strategy. But how will you know whether you have the right manager onboard? Understanding the manager's working style and the results he's bringing is one way. However, If you need detailed analysis, you might want to look deeper.

Today in this piece, I'm gonna shed some light on some of the signs of a manager that either you would like to be addressed or try to get a new one altogether.

Having a bad manager triggers business failure.

Discourages Decentralization

Decentralization is one of the most important parts of any business. Nowadays, businesses are looking for people who can run the show by themselves. Of course, having a manager—like the captain of a ship—is always beneficial but most of the time the real work is done by the team members.

Now, unsurprisingly it may happen that someone from this team itself will break out the shackles and show a tremendous potential of becoming a leader. In a situation like this, if a manager is allowing that talent to prosper and paving a road for more decentralization by allowing that person to try hands in team management, then that shows how confident that manager is!

On the contrary, if a manager keeps things limited to himself and tried to micromanage things, then it not only curbs the growing talent but also make team members lost their interest in their jobs—severely impacting their productivity and your business' growth.

That's the main reason a manager should always encourage decentralization into the team

Messes Up Communication

Communication plays a key role in team bonding and overall growth. Your business needs to have the right flow of information transfer all the time from top to bottom and through the right channel.

One of the main tasks of managers is to communicate properly and clearly with their team members. If a manager is finding it difficult to pass on the message from the management to the team, then it's time that you find a replacement.

Good managers always know how to communicate with their teams. Sometimes, you have to deal with your team members individually. That's where a manager's role comes into the picture. His job is to identify and keep hold of the team's pulse and act accordingly to get the things done faster.

Never Plans

A manager's job is to have a plan for everything the team is and supposed to work on. It's important that managers plan well in advance to ensure that the set targets are met.

All good managers not only plan in advance but also make their teams ready for the challenges they might face in the future.

However, bad managers work on an ad-hoc basis. They just go with the flow and let the teams work in the same manner, leaving things completely haywire.

It's not enough to just make plans and implement them. You also need to have the proper machinery and clear mindset to track the work. Bad managers lack this quality.

Never Gives Consistent Feedback

There should always be continuous back and forth between the team members and managers. Managers should always give valuable feedback on the team's work. This helps in creating an environment that provides job satisfaction to the team members and keeps them connected with your business.

Letting the employees work on their own without establishing any connection with them may mess up things like never before. Managers should always review the team's work and give proper suggestions to improve. However, the feedback process should be consistent on average. If your manager gives inconsistent feedback to the team on a regular basis, it's time that you make the change.

No Limits to Favoritism

It's no secret that we have been on both sides of favoritism some point of time in our careers. It's natural that every manager picks a few people who can help him/her do things seamlessly.

However, the problem starts when the leadership starts trusting the people of their coterie more than anyone else and stops listening to the external suggestions. On top of it, some managers also try to curb the reach and talent of people who are working hard but outside of their camp.

That's what makes teams lost their interest. Appreciation and acceptance are the two important things that people want in their lives. The same goes for the employees on the work front. If they feel that they are not being accepted by the managers let alone appreciated, they will lose all the respect for your company, which might prove harmful to you in the longer run.

Always Feels Insecure

Insecurity is a quality of an underconfident person and an underconfident manager is a strict no-no. If a manager is always insecure about all the things, the team also may not perform at their highest potential.

If a manager is insecure about the talent emerging in his own team, a person who's working hard in a different team, etc., then most of the manager's time will go into making protective plans for himself/herself, which takes energy and distracts the whole team.

Being insecure is definitely a sign of a person with no mature character and thus a bad manager.

Conclusion

Managers are an integral part of any business team. It's the designation that you get after years of experience and the knowledge that you receive during your career. While it's easy to appear as a manager but not to act like a real one.

Most of the things above are signs of a manager that you would not want in your company. It's better to find a replacement and a person that can do justice to your vision of the business and can help you take it further.
